Sarlat Market: Complete Guide
Sarlat Market: Complete Guide
Sarlat Market dates back to medieval times and is the most famous market in the Dordogne. Held twice a week in the stunning golden-stone old town, it is one of the great food markets of France. No visit to the region is complete without experiencing the sights, smells, and flavours of Sarlat’s market.
Market Days
Wednesday: Food market in and around Place de la Liberté, mornings until approximately 1pm. Smaller and more local than Saturday — perfect for a quieter experience.
Saturday: The big market. Food producers set up in Place de la Liberté from 8:30am to 1pm. General traders with a variety of goods line rue de la République all day until 6pm. The busiest and most atmospheric market in the Dordogne.
What to Buy
The Dordogne and Sarlat are famous for:
- Confit de canard and duck products
- Foie gras (fresh and tinned)
- Walnuts and walnut oil
- Rocamadour goats cheese
- Bergerac wines
- Black Périgord truffles (in season)
- Fresh strawberries, cherries and seasonal fruit
- Honey, preserves, and artisan breads
Visitor Tips
Arrive early (before 10am on Saturday) to avoid the worst crowds and get the best produce. Bring cash — not all stalls accept cards. The market winds through Sarlat’s medieval streets, so wear comfortable shoes. For a true feast, buy picnic supplies and head to the nearby gardens or the cathedral steps to eat.
Fun fact: Sarlat’s Saturday market dates back to the 13th century and has been held in the same location in Place de la Liberté for over 700 years.
