Château des Milandes: Complete Guide to Visiting

Château des Milandes is a magnificent Renaissance château most famous as the former home of the legendary entertainer Josephine Baker. Set in elegant formal gardens overlooking the Dordogne Valley, it offers a unique blend of 15th-century architecture and the extraordinary story of one of the 20th century’s most remarkable women.

History

Built in 1489, Milandes was a noble residence built in the elegant Flamboyant Gothic style. In 1930, the American-born entertainer Josephine Baker discovered the château and fell in love with it. She moved in from 1947 to 1968, creating a home for her twelve adopted children from around the world — she called them her “Rainbow Tribe”. The château is now a museum dedicated to her extraordinary life, with fourteen rooms of original costumes, photos, and personal memorabilia.

Fun fact: Josephine Baker adopted 12 children of different nationalities and religions to show that people of all races could live together in harmony.
