Château de Commarque: Complete Guide to Visiting
Château de Commarque: Complete Guide to Visiting
Perched on a rocky spur in the Beune Valley, Château de Commarque is a ruined medieval fortress with prehistoric caves hidden beneath it. One of the most atmospheric and mysterious castles in the Dordogne, it offers a unique journey through 15,000 years of human history — from Paleolithic cave dwellers to medieval knights.
History
The site has been occupied since prehistoric times. Built in the 11th century to protect the Benedictine abbey of Sarlat, Commarque became a major stronghold during the Middle Ages. It was abandoned in the 18th century and fell into ruin. Recent restoration work has revealed prehistoric caves and rock shelters beneath the castle, showing continuous human occupation from Paleolithic times to the Middle Ages. The site has been awarded 3 stars in the Michelin Green Guide.
Fun fact: The only château in the Dordogne rated 3 stars in the Michelin Green Guide. Prehistoric caves were discovered beneath the castle during restoration work.
