Montignac
Montignac is a pretty historic town on the banks of the Vezere river that is most known for its famous nearby neighbour Lascaux II caves. It is about 20 km from Sarlat and about 40 km from the transport hub of Brive.
The main street of the town dates from the 14th century and has many lovely old stone houses and stores. Perched high above the town on a rocky outcrop is the remains of Chateau de Montignac once an important defensive castle in the area but now a ruin. A beautiful stone arched bridge spans the river. The produce market is held every Wednesday.
Due to its location and the beauty of the town Montignac is a very popular tourist town and receives many visitors every year.
Things to See and Do in Montignac
Lascaux II
Just our of town are the famous pre-historic caves of Lascaux. Buy your tickets at the Montignac Tourist Office.
Place de l’Englise
The church here is home to the painting ‘ La Mort de St Bruno’ believed to be by Juan Sanchez-Cotan.
Place d’Amis
Nest to the church with houses dating from the 14th century.
Bridge
The Vezere River is spanned by a beautiful bridge which the original foundations date back to the 13th C.
River Dining
There a several restaurants along the river which make a beautiful spot for lunch during the warmer months.
Market
The towns has a very popular market held every Wednesday morning.
