Terrason

Terrassons full name is Terrasson-Lavilledieu and it is in the Dordogne department of France. Terrasson sits between Montignac which is famous for its Lascaux caves and the transport hub of Brive-la-Gaillarde. It is also close to both the North – South A20 motorway and the A89 which runs East – West.

Terrasson on most famous for The Gardens of Imagination (Jardins d’Imaginaire) which is classified as a ‘remarkable French garden’ by the French Ministry of Culture.

The garden was designed in 1996 by landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson to present thirteen tableaux of the myths and legends of the history of gardens. It uses simple natural elements; trees, flowers, water and stone to suggest the passage of mankind from nature to agriculture to the city. It uses a symbolic sacred wood, a rose garden, topiary art, and fountains to tell the story. The town itself is a pretty town on the Vezere River with cobble streets and is largely pedestrianised.

Place Bouquier is half way up the hill and is a pretty square with lovely buildings on it.

The abbey at the top of the hill was destroyed in the 100 years war, rebuilt and then destroyed again during the War of Religion. The facade has now been restored and the interior is undergoing restoration.

Behind the church is the old chateau and ramparts.

The 12th century bridge (Vieux Pont) across the river is a highlight of this pretty town.

Market day is Thursday.
